  • 16:00 - 20:00 We drive for about one hour to Histria where we visit the oldest urban structure in the country and the first pontic fortress on the map of the Roman Empire. Histria archaeological site covers 72 hectars and includes ruins of 7m high walls, a Roman forum, the temples of Aphrodite and Zeus, two Roman baths, eight basilicas, workshops and shopping areas. This whole place is one of the most important historical points in Romania and that’s for sure! After which, we continue our journey to Sarichioi village, the central point of this tour.

So, in this way you will find out more about the authenticity of this beautiful region. Our next stop is at the famous fortress of Enisala. Dating back to the end of the 13th century and being one of the many fortresses built by the Genoese merchants who domidated the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea in that period, this is their single one in Dobrogea and an icon of the region for sure. Besides the historical value and impeccable presentantion, we also love this place for the fabulous view that opens in the top of the hill. You will surely fall in love! We continue by visiting the Mosque of Babadag, built in 1610, during the time of Sultan Mehmet III. The courtyard of the mosque also includes parsonage and the tomb of its founder. Then we arrive in Slava Rusă, another dobrogean village where the predominant population is that of the Russian-Lipovans (around 75% of the total). We visit Vovidenia, a nuns monastery, and Uspenia, a munks monastery. These two old rites monasteries are unique in the world. But this place has a much richer history. During the domination of the Roman Empire on this land, they founded here the Fortress of Ibida, which became at a certain moment stronger and more economically developed even than the urban millenaries Tomis, Callatis and Histria. We discover a few parts of the archeological site of Ibida.
  • 14:00 - 16:00 Traditional lunch break in a monastery, with local food ingredients cooked by the nuns. Trust us, you will want to pack some food and take away!
  • 16:00 - 18:00 On our way back to Sarichioi village via Ciucurova - Nicolae Bălcescu - Mihai Bravu - Zebil route, we will stop a few moments in Slava Cercheză to talk a little bit about cerchezi, this minority arrived from the heart of the Caucasus Mountains. Around 20.000 cerchezi established here at the end of the 19th century and besides the ethnic colors, they brought with them a lot of problems in the region. Isn't that fascinating the history of Dobrogea?
  • 18:00 - 20:00 Free time for relaxing at the pool in Sarichioi.
  • 20:00 - 22:00 Dinner at the guest house.

The itinerary of this day has a length of 87 km and we will spend about 2 hours in the car.

DAY 4 - Exploring Dobrogea
  • 07:00 - 09:00 Breakfast at the guest house.
  • 09:00 - 13:00 Our first stop of this day is in Jurilovca, another place strongly marked by Russian-Lipovans traditions and a village considered one of the most beautiful in Dobrogea. The colorful houses have preserved the specificity of the place and are well maintained by the hard working local people. Then we arrive at the headland of Doloșman (Cape Doloșman) and we are amazed by the view over the lakes that opens here. For a couple of moments, you will remain speechless! Finally, we discover the archeological site of Orgame, an important fortress built by the Greeks since the 7th century BC. After being conquered by the Romans in the 1st century AD, the fortress was renamed as Argamum. The entire site lies on more than 100 hectares and we see here an access gate, portions of the defense wall (high and thick a few meters), Paleocristian basilicas and several streets.
  • 13:00 - 15:00 Transfer by boat (15 minutes) to Gura Portiței, a piece of heaven that we used to call it the new pearl of the Romanian seaside. Lunch break in a great fishery after we arrive.
  • 15:00 - 19:00 Free time for relaxing on the beach.
  • 19:00 - 22:00 We return in Sarichoi and dinner at the guest house.

DAY 5 - Exploring Dobrogea
  • 07:00 - 08:00 Breakfast at the guest house.
  • 08:00 - 14:00 Our first stop of this day is at Celic-Dere Monastery, founded by two Russian-Lipovans monks in 1841. The name is token from the nearby brook. At the beginning it was a mixed monastery, but later the monks moved to the current Saon Monastery (our second stop) and this place thus remaining a nuns’s monastery (about 80 in numbers). The next stop is at Cocos Monastery founded in 1833 by three Romanian monks from Athos Mountain (Greece) and then at the Paleocristian Church from Niculițel, a basilica built in the 4th century AD, during the reign of Emperor Valerius. A few history-surprises await us here. Finally, we arrive at the ruins of Noviodunum Fortress, a former Roman castrum that was the base of the Classis Flavia Moesica and an important naval military base during the Roman Empire. The Roman emperor Flavius Julius Valens signed here with the Goths an important treaty of peace on a ship in the middle of the Danube River, neither on the territory of the empire nor on the enemy territory because the Visigoth King (Germanic) swore to his father that he will never tread on the Roman land. Isn't that fascinanting?
  • 14:00 - 19:00 We reach in Măcin at the vineyard of Sarica Niculițel, considered to be the oldest viticultural area known on the land of Dobrogea, a supplier of the Royal House of Romania in the present. Here we’ll take a traditional Dobrogean lunch, have a few tastings and then visit the wine cellar.
